University Library - Interior Design

Client : Dean of University

The Dean of Cambridge School of Art has a great passion for books and is very careful with the students studying at this University. This year he decided to offer a special space for them where they can study and be creative, a library.

He wants the library to be an open space. He desires something different from the other libraries. He decided from the initial old building to have section of it that has a contrast with a contemporary style to make it stand out through the old buildings that are in Cambridge.
The place where is placed the building is a busy area so it’s role is to make it fit there and easy to find for the students, also the entrance to be visible and accessible for people with handicapped. It has to be creative and complex part of the building with sitting area, study areas, toilets, and relaxing and silent zones.

The students were asked what would they wish the library to have and the majority of them said that they would want a sitting place with a nice view with an expose at natural day light. Also other suggestions were that they would have a relaxing reading space.

The library will be available 24/7 and the stuff working there will make the space a friendly and comfortable to be in, helping student to find whatever book they need, and also they will get support for other tutors from the University when they are available.

The library will be available and it will be used by approximately 800 students, and the building is not that big so it has to be smart divided for every each of the sections that are required, therefore in order to achieve the requirements the building will need to be out of order to represent the creative students and also well organized to accomplish all it’s needs.
FEEDBACK
"An intriguing an creative point to begin with (ink in water) - you develop this through sketch book with some remarkable results, interesting visualisations and concept work.
We enjoyed the spatial connections you make in early visualisations in sketchbook. "

DESIGN STATEMENT

I am asked to design the Mellish Clark building into a Library. This building was built in a basic modern style, and my client is requesting a contemporary style for the library. In order to do this I will create a harmonic contrast of these two styles, and also with the busy area around this building. The building and the entrance have to be visible and stand out so the people who want to go to the library can easily find them.
The interior will be a big two floors open space, with different areas and rooms spread around it. These rooms are going to be: relaxing silent reading areas, open sitting areas for studying and presentation room.

The open sitting area will have a pleasant chromatic and the colours or contrast in the room won’t be too noisy or energetic. It will be composed of 2 floors with sitting areas for studying, reading all around the room and also a part next to windows so the students can get natural if they want. This space will have the necessary equipment for the students to be able to study, research or create, like digital or art supplies. Also there will be a help Desk where the students will be able to constantly find the staff to help or advise them.

The relaxing reading area will be designed with comfortable sitting chairs, so the students won’t have to leave because the furniture is uncomfortable. The presentation rooms will have the right digital and sitting equipment to provide the need for a presentation or any other reason students might need the room for. It will also be possible to use them as rooms for group work or book clubs. The toilets will be at the underground floor. It will also have a drinks and food machine so students will be able to get supplies even after the closing times.

In order to get the meaning and purposes of a library and even more I will have to make the space organized and smart planned and make sure that every part of the area is well used and to consider students need.
