Stool design - Derby museum

The design which was taken onto further development. This was produced after various meetings with the client in order to fully understand what they wanted from the brief.
Modelling in card was used to define the proportion of the stool, and see if the idea of using the stool as a step and seat would work. This modelling was also very useful in explaining the idea to clients, and showing them how it would work in full size.

With card modelling finished the next step was to produce some full scale models in card, these were used in the next few meetings. With the outcome of the meetings being the design you can see being built below.
A stage which took far longer than expected, with complications in assemblying the stools. However assembly was complete, with 3 stools made. 2 for the museum and 1 for strength testing, the stool holding up to 130kg before showing some signs of strain. Making it clear that the design could accomodate any member of the public, and safety was not an issue.
The test model, which was not finished as it was not going to be used for any other means than strength testing.
Finally, production is complete. A picture was taken before these were sent to be used by customers at Derby museum. Production stages included use of an automated CNC machine, craft work, and various tests relating to strength, rigidity, and overall use. We were very pleased with the final finish, with minor changes which would be recommended if the stool would be made again, in relation to curving the seats slightly, having text or symbols on the side to promote Derby Museum, and possibly making it slightly smaller so that more could be fit into one room or exhibition space.

However, the overall finish was to a quality which Derby Museum were happy with, and are still using within their new exhibition space, and planning or building more to be used in other exhibitions and Museums.
