Bitcoin Travel Currency

Brief
Devise a visual identity system for the virtual currency, considering how this could be used to reposition and promote the Bitcoin for everyone. Create a strategy and produce a relevant promotional campaign that would encourage consumers to adopt the virtual currency.

Outcome
Holiday makers and frequent travellers currently loose significant amounts of money due to poor currency exchange rates and bank charges, but if they switched to using Bitcoin, a currency with no banks, such charges would be avoided. With this insight, I therefore decided to rebrand Bitcoin as a travel currency, to increase the profile of the digital currency and to attract a mainstream audience.

The logo that I create is inspired by a proposed icon to replace the existing Bitcoin logo. The Thai Baht icon is regularly used to represent Bitcoin, so to avoid confusion, a new symbol had been proposed but not adopted. So by using this symbol, I hoped to build upon the current Bitcoin audience and not alienate it. I also used a similar colour palette to that of the current Bitcoin identity, to again relate to the existing audience but to also to banking and travel industries.

For this project, I chose a distinctive humanist typeface, Houschka Rounded Alt, to evoke similarities to existing banking institutes, in an attempt to install a level of trust in the currency. As its a multi lingual typeface, allows Bitcoin promotion to be consistent throughout the world. I wanted to imply a sense of speed with the logo, hense the italicised font, as does the three dashes which also signify the three payment methods used by the app.

The Bitcoin Travel App, built upon existing payment apps and adapting them for travel and multicurrency use, would allow users to transfer money peer to peer, through contactless technology, QR codes and mobile numbers, in the local currency or in Bitcoin. Users would be able to withdraw or deposit the local currency at major airports and train stations, using contactless and QR enabled Bitcoin ATMs, ultimately allowing you to get a perfect rate of exchange, for those occasions when paying directly with Bitcoin isn’t an option. The app would also double as a journey and navigation service, enabling you to book flights, save and plan your journey, advise you on travel routes and navigate you to recommending you places of interest.
