Founded during the British Empire in 1882, the Dharavi slum covers an area of over 500 acres. However, the slum has an active economy. Goods such as leather, textiles and pottery are made within by its inhabitants then exported around the world.
It has been estimated that Dharavi's annual turnover is up to US$500 million.
