THE FOUNTAIN [COVER VERSION]

The Fountain, Dover, Kent. [Cover Version]
Rotation Negotiable;

The concept of my design is to imitate a floating toruswhich rapes around and protects the existing fountain, providing elevatedseating to view multiple events.
The proposed scheme provides a section of what could be acomplete torus providing a full 360 degrees of elevated seating, but as statedin the brief - the cover for the fountain should not exceed a budget of£10,000. The proposed scheme is therefore been reduced to a section of the fulldesign, which if required could be completed at a later date. And so thesection has been specifically been designed to allow the seating to be positionedat any rotation, depending on the orientation of the event-taking place – hencethe title ‘Rotation negotiable’. It is of my Interest that the cover should beable to provide additional uses for the site - other than providing seating forthe viewing Olympics, being able facilitate multiple functions throughout theyear. Which as a result - I have highlighted possible additional uses for thispiece; At the centre of the scheme the covering of the existing fountain willconsist of a basic ply plinth, protecting the fountain but also providing aplatform for which the Christmas tree could be positioned / framed at thecentre of the torus, allowing the steel sheet wrapping to reflect the lightsfrom the tree to onto the square. Or accommodating the Olympic torch, promotingpublic art or even the uncovering of the fountain.  Being situated at the centre of the torus -encourages people to appreciate its presence, as you are forced to walk up andaround before reaching the seating and could also encourage public interaction,of any ‘public art’ which could be displayed on the plinth. The optionalorientation of the seating would also encourage more events to take place atthe town square, allowing the seating to be rotated in or out of position – resultingin the fountain being transformed into an events hub.
