WASTER - Litter Awareness App Concept

'Waster' Litter Awareness App Concept

Project Brief: Using the area of Leeds as a starting point, research and identify potential communication issues or problems in your allocated area. You must develop innovative and entrepreneurial ideas to help solve these problems.

Concept: within the residential neighbourhood it was very neglected and depreciated, which was a sad site to see. Left, right and center there is littered debris scattered around; from abandoned furniture on the roads and alleyways, to graffiti tagged on walls, and a disproportionate ratio of rubbish to bins.

Experiencing litter first hand triggered a thought to construct a campaign to tackle this ongoing problem. I proposed to create an interactive mobile phone application, which would help raise awareness of litter in your area. I received positive reviews from the proposal regarding the concept, so chose to progress and design the user interface for this app and see it through to a functional prototype stage.

The concept behind the app is very straightforward for users to understand; simply take a photograph of what litter you stumble across on your journies, tag the location and upload it onto the network. Other users will then be able to rate your photo on a scale of how much litter there is. If a certain area then becomes a ‘hot spot’ for waste, it will trigger getting in contact with the local council for that specific area, where they can then decide to take necessary action.

Goal: to create an exciting campaign which helps contribute towards helping the evergoing issue of litter.

Outcome: inticing, ambitious idea, but would people download and use it? Is the colour scheme particularly inviting or engaging? I should have focused more on the concept with the layout.

Moving Forward: conducting more first hand research and getting more feedback to ensure I get a different perspective on things, and that I really think about all possibilities and factors which could come into play would have been useful. Also, I must not jump straight into the first idea and take time to break apart future ideas ensuring there is substantial content to work with.

Personal Rating: 6.5/10, potential to shine, but at the end of the day, who's going to download an App to post litter pictures on? I could have spent a little more time to work on the visual aesthetics of it all; with the whole layout, colour scheme, logos etc being a little bit scrappy round the sides. Hey-ho, first user interface attempt and not a bad effort for first time and the limited time frame. Nevertheless, a lot of positives and learning points to take away from the project, and more importantly I enjoyed the creation of it all, which makes it a valuable experience looking into the future.

..If you can spare a second to thumbs up the project, leave a comment, and share the love, it would be most appreciated! I hope you enjoyed the browse! Take care
