OVERVIEW
I was tasked with creating the design for our UW Rotaract Club member T-shirts. The front of the shirt would feature a single-colour version of our club logo, while the back needed to be designed from scratch.
FRONT
While the overall design and form stayed close to the original logo, several iterations were needed to move it from a 4-colour to a monotone design. The biggest challenge with using a single colour was losing information hierarchy. With no variation between sections, the design became messy and the identifying text lost prominence. To solve this, I added a diagonal pinstriping to the secondary elements. This texture works excellently on screen printed clothes, as it reduces the possibility of cracks forming from wear and tear. The stretchier fabric between the white stripes acts to relieve pressures, meaning the design lasts longer.
BACK
The back of the shirt needed to be designed from scratch. After brainstorming with the board members, we decided to feature our club's Rotary District number, 7080, on the back. However, the design looked awkward with the two gaping holes in the zeroes, in contrast with the close lines in the 7 and 8. This problem led me to a functional solution: it allowed us to feature the Rotary International wheel and University of Waterloo crest, our two parent organizations.
TEXTURIZING
I used the same pinstriping technique to detail the two logos and tie the back's design in with the front's. Several versions were tested, to strike a relative balance between the light Waterloo logo and the visually heavier Rotary wheel.
RESULT
The final shirt turned out excellent, and is now owned by every University of Waterloo Rotaract member! Photos of the shirt in action can be found on the UW Rotaract Facebook page.
