The concept for this design is based on tessellation in 3 dimensions. When looking to nature for inspiration we came across the rhombic dodecahedron which is used in nature by bees to cap off the ends of honeycombs, and also in crystal formations. This shape can tessellate in 3 dimensional space and stacked to fill a space, much like hexagons fill a plane. This seemed like the perfect form for creating a prefabricated cell that could be stacked any number of ways based on its location and intended use. One strong focus when designing this cell was that it needed to be a prefabricated modular kit parts that could be assembled on site in any configuration.
