Loft Design - Haruki Murakami

The design for Haruki Murakami's residence speaks for parts of this dynamic and broad persona, where the focal point is captured in the tree, which roots from the ground and vanishes into different areas of the house, showing the connectivity between both of his parallel realities.

The material itself represents the transitions and holds value to the changes in his life. Reflective elements such as mirrors, metal and glass are merging with matte textures like wood and concrete. These are the symbolism of Murakami’s novel, his imagination and his life journey. The timber roots and gradually changes to metal and glass, meaning his Japanese background do not restrict him to think out of the box and explore western writing style.

The guest living area is aimed to be partly invisible to narrow the attention toward the fireplace, the tree. The tree branches however, merge into every material it comes into contact with showing his adaptive nature and openness to change. His work and lifestyle are represented through the design of the mezzanine, which the form is to be created in a surrealistic manner. Haruki Murakami is a soul of many traits, and person of many personas.
