This book focuses on the concept of memory and family. We rely on artifacts in order to preserve memories. This work is my way of creating a photo album, documenting the experiences of my family in the mid twentieth century.

Through the use of my grandmother’s images, I am investigating my family history. While creating this work, I have taken notice of how my grandmother’s memory of certain photographs has changed since her youth. There are faces in the photos that she no longer recognizes because of all the time that has passed. I recognize even fewer because of my disconnection from some of my older family members.

The process of bookbinding is significant to me because of the level of craft and the tradition behind it. I like the aesthetic of cutting paper because of how delicate it is and how it affects the way the viewer handles it. By overlapping them, a relationship is created between the contours and as well as the shadows. Putting the images together in a book unifies the piece and lets the viewer experience the photographs more in depth.
