Toy Airship: Typeface Project

THE PROJECT
This university project presented me with a series of short phrases and asked me to choose one as inspiration for a new typeface. The instance I chose was 'Industry of the Miniature'.

The concept I came up with draws inspiration from industrial revolution and Victorian era design, collectable toys and Steampunk. I decided to create a font for the fictional company Toy Airship who provide Steampunk inspired theatre and craft events for 6 to 12-year-olds. Industry of the Miniature could imply small industrial items such as cogs and rivets, but also small things being industrial. Through looking at items aimed at children such as the mice from Bagpuss and Hornby trains, I decided on my audience being both industrial and miniature - children who are creative and enjoy making things and being busy - which I summed up in the tag line ‘Create. Imagine. Adventure.’

The final font takes a bold serif and brings it into a Steampunk industrial world of airships and Victoriana.
Inital consideration of the instance
Visual inspiration and idea generation
Final development sketches
The regular version of the typeface.
An alternative, black version of the regular typeface.
My promotional piece for the typeface - this promotes both the typeface and the fictional company of the same name. The flyer could be an invitation to an event or general information about the company and/or upcoming events.
