National Archives Foundation

The Foundation for the National Archives is an independent nonprofit that increases public awareness of the National Archives, inspires a deeper appreciation of our country’s heritage, and encourages citizen engagement in our democracy. As the National Archives’ nonprofit partner, the Foundation generates financial and creative support for National Archives exhibitions, public programs, and educational initiatives, introducing America’s records to people around the U.S. and the world. The Foundation’s support makes possible the National Archives Museum in Washington, DC.

I created this logo for a design competition that began on December 1. I am now a finalist in the competition, along with two other designers whose works I am competing against. The competition results will be announced on December 8.
I gave the team at the National Archives Foundation four primary typefaces to choose from: Hominis by Paul Lloyd, Campton Bold by Rene Bieder, Geotica 2012 by Exljbris Font Foundry, and Nexa Rust Slab by Fontfabric Type Foundry (see above). I also gave them four different logo variations that they could use in different layouts. These variations were designed to maintain brand consistency despite the difference in shape and composition.
