Night Safari, the most recent album by Populous, out on Bad Panda / Interbang Records, and marks his comeback six years after the issue of Drawn In Basic, his last full-length published by Morr Music. It is an imaginary nighttime safari with his partners in adventure (Clap Clap!, Cuushe, Digi G'Alessio, lokoi, DJ Khalab, and Giorgio Tuma) using field recordings from the four corners of the world, samples taken from hidden records, African poly-rhythms and kraut synths.
The first time we talked about the art direction for the record cover and he told me the title I immediately thought about this masterpiece:
The Sleeping Gypsy (La Bohémienne endormie) is an 1897 oil painting by French Naïve artist Henri Rousseau. It is a fantastical depiction of a lion musing over a sleeping woman on a moonlit night. The painting has served as inspiration for poetry and music, and has been altered and parodied by various artists often and is the center inspiration for Night Safari as well.
