a3 Concept • Controller for 3D data

When physical controls are intuitive and natural, they disappear from the mind entirely. Interfacing with a system becomes second nature, allowing all focus and admiration to be placed on the 3D data itself.

Working with Aemass Inc., I set out to create a pair of ergonomic controllers for interfacing with the company's three dimensional data in the most seemless and comfortable way possible.

The controller's form allows the user's fingers to curve to their natural, relaxed positions. This minimizes strain on muscles and joints allowing comfortable use for hours on end.

Dual Controllers (one for each hand) allow the possibility of optional gesture based interaction. (Pinch to zoom • rotate to change camera position in space • natural "pinching" motion for grabbing / moving objects) etc.

With one controller in each hand, two joysticks (and 6 buttons) allow for complete spatial navigation.

- foam iteration -
- 3D Scan -
- wireframe solidworks model -
- 3D print - working prototype -
- Detachable rings for different sized fingers -
- fitted with "guts" from a wireless mouse, mapped to work with 3d interface -
Simply flip the controller to the other side of your finger to resume daily tasks such as writing, drinking coffee or reading the paper
- detachable ring for various sized fingers -
- pinch to release -
