Billboard and Portrait Style Movie Web Ads

I created a banner style movie web ad, adhering to the IAB guidelines. The overall size of the banner is 970px x 250px.

The basic concept behind my movie is a vampire haunting/wandering the snow covered woods and luring and attacking any victims she might come across. Since vampire movies seem to be really popular at the moment (or were a couple of years ago, at least), I decided to create a vampire type movie as well. I figured this movie would appeal to teenagers (and maybe some adults), at least.

I used a number of different techniques and filters to create the banner.

Steps:
1)      I created a 970px x 250px document, with a ppi/dpi of 150.

2)      Opened photo of lady and extracted from the background and brought it over to the 970px x 250 document.

3)      I converted the image to a Smart Object and to get the glow effect on the image, I opened Filter Gallery and chose Distort and diffuse glow. I lowered the graininess effect and changed the glow amount and clear amount to 8 and 9, respectively.

4)      I duplicated the smart object layer file and converted that file into raster layer. I added a smudge stick layer filter to this layer and erased areas of the face just so the scarf and some of the hair would retain the effect.

5)      I then duplicated the original smart object layer again, converted it to a raster layer then erased most of it, leaving the eyes, nose, and lips area mostly untouched, so the details would remain sharp.

6)      I gave her red eyes by making a separate layer, coloring in the eyes with red with the brush, and then converting the blending mode to overlay. I duplicated this layer to enhance the color of the eyes, though the opacity was dropped to 29%.

7)      I enhanced the color of her hair by painting the area red, but changing the blending mode to multiply and dropping the opacity to 67%.

8)      The lip stick color was enhanced the same way as the eyes and hair, but the blending mode was changed to hard light and the opacity was dropped to 68%.

9)      I added the snow covered background behind the image and a smudge stick effect to it via filter gallery --> artistic --> smudge stick. The stroke length was dropped to 0, while the highlight area and intensity was changed to 2 and 10, respectively.

10)   The red overcast light was added to the background by making a new layer and adding a red to transparent gradient effect to it. The blending mode was changed to vivid light and the opacity was dropped to 68%.

11)   The snow was added by using an image and placing its layer on top of everything. The blending mode was changed to screen. To give the snow flakes more of a glow, I a diffuse glow filter to it. Glow amount and clear amount was set to 8 and 9.

12)   The grungy looking square on the left side was added using a special brush. To get the foggy tree background image, I did a clipping mask using the bg image and changed the blending mode of it to linear light and dropped the opacity to 35%.

13)   The text was added on top of the block area and the format was changed to center text.

14)   The blood splatter on the movie title was added using a special style brush and a gradient color of red to white was added to it.

15)   I added a texture background layer on top of all the layers and changed the blending mode to color burn and lowered the opacity to 53%.
For the portrait style movie web ad, I mostly used the same images and effects that I used in my banner style ad and copied and pasted them over.

Using the IAB guidelines for portrait style web ads, the overall dimensions of my banner is that of 300px x 1050px. With the logo size being 270px x 40px, the larger image that of 270px x 460px and the two smaller images below 270px x 202px. The appropriate padding and spacing in between and around each image were added to adhere to IAB's guidelines.

To set up the layout of the portrait movie web ad, I created a 300px x 1050px document at 150dpi/ppi.

I then created a “placement” block for where each image was going to go, in their respective sizes using the rectangle tool.

I then basically started bringing over images and layers that I used in my banner style movie web ad and using the clipping mask to fit them into each block area that they were supposed to go.

I added the grunge looking effect to the larger image area using a special effect brush.

I added play buttons and progress bar, by using the circle tool and rectangle tool, filling them with black or dark grey and lowering the opacity of them. The play arrows were created using the pen tool and filling it with white, as were the speaker icon and the expand box icon.

The advertisement block at the top was created by using the rectangle tool to create the rectangle and filling the color to light grey. Text was then typed into the block.
