The future is not what it used to
First place in the architectural contest "2030 Medellín ciudad soñada"
In the end of 2010 I worked along more 5 creative professionals (architects and designers) in the architectural contest "2030 Medellín dreamed city".  The team was formed by six people from different countries: Antonio Yemail, Felipe Rodriguez and me, from Colombia; Elizabeth Añaños, from Perú; Luis Pimentel, from Venezuela; and Sebastián Contreras, from Chile. We worked very well despite the distance, using skype and dropbox, and we won first place!

Our proposal was based in rethinking Medellin city without creating more buildings. We analyzed the Colombian situation in terms of technology, ecology, social phenomena, and the overwhelming problem of lack of space. Then, we worked using the concept of "shrinking" as the core of this conceptual proposal, because we think future is not about building and consuming more, but about adapting what already exists. Therefore, we let the river flood across the metropolitan area, pointing in the importance of protecting natural resources; we used old structures to create new spaces for libraries, schools, and bio-medical laboratories; we illustrated how public space could be used by farmes and people that are displaced by the violence and came to the city from the country, to plant food in urban gardens; we used the eclectic landscape, that now a days people perceives as poverty, as a reference for the aesthetic. In the process, we created beauty as well as new relationships between the city and its citizens by taking into account people’s actions in order to create a dreamed city during time.
