OUP Science Textbook Covers

Concept The Activate books are designed to be colourful, bright, and eye-catching. The artwork takes inspiration from the innate beauty of cells, and the patterns that lie within microscopic images. Textures have been created from a variety of media such as ink, bleached fabric and painted OHP film, playing on the experimental, hands-on nature of science. The pattern for book 1 suggests human body cells with the ovum, book 2 suggests plant cells, and book 3 suggests the study of DNA with fingerprints. A different colour scheme is used for each of the three year groups. The sheer number and repetition of elements form a pattern that fills the page, offering a sense of vast immersion and opening up an exciting world of scientific exploration. Text is integrated within the pattern, almost like an under layer revealed when the surface is scratched away. The cover artwork is fresh and modern, presenting the academic subject in an appealing, fun, engaging way. The textural, brightly coloured patterns aim to appeal to a young audience of both boys and girls. Although at first glance, what the pattern actually is may be unclear, but once the students have covered the syllabus, they will soon be able to recognize and understand exactly what the cover imagery is.
