WHAT IT DOES
OMGIMG lets users talk with pictures. Using a simple interface that leverages the Google Image API, OMGIMG allows users to riff on a daily "starter" image - and on one another's responses - to create entire dialogues using only images. The project was completed for Clay Shirky's Designing Conversational Spaces class at ITP, and still has a loyal daily user base.

BASED ON INSIGHTS
Most public conversations that happen online today are still confined to traditional threaded forums. But private dialogues – via email, chat, social networks, etc. – are often rich in visual media and the instant cultural references it allows. With OMGIMG, we wanted to combine visual media and structured conversation to surface new user experiences and behaviors.

MY ROLE
I was part of a team that developed OMGIMG. I worked on the initial product concept, design and user experience, and coded the initial prototype of the site.

AHEAD OF THE CURVE
OMGIMG was created in February of 2011. Unbeknownst to us at the time, at least three other similar efforts were underway from well-known names in the tech world:

Canv.as Developed by 4chan founder Christopher "moot" Poole, Canvas allows users to manipulate and converse with images.

Photovine Developed by Google, Photovine was a thematic image-sharing service.

Piictu A member of the current TechStars NewYork class, Piictu also encourages users to "talk and play with pics" via a mobile application.
