I chose this painting which is in the form of naturalism. Judith Slaying Holofernes ca 1614-1620 by Artemisia Gentileschi. The special attention to detail of the lines in the face, hands, and the body movement give it a deep feeling of realism. There’s no distortion or unnatural elements in this piece. The soft balanced lines of the blanket and sheet are done to such a great extent that it gives the feel of naturalism. The blood dripping down as Judith is beheading Holofernes isn’t over done or dramatic. It’s done perfectly to give that feel of realism as he’s gripping his hand as if he was trying to hold onto his life which is being ended. The way the artist balanced the light and dark in order to draw your eyes in to look deeper into this painting is absolutely stunning. They have not been put in the form of Romanticism or abstraction in any way.
