Busker (COMP 460 2010)

Busker

This project involved the use of an Xbox 360 Rock Band controller to play musical notes. Each button on the Rock Band guitar was mapped to a real note in a given key, while three button chords were mapped to specific chords. The key that the guitar was playing could be changed by using the D-pad.

To create the note instructions that would scroll on the screen, MIDI files were parsed and edited. The MIDI file would be parsed to obtain the names of the notes in the song, and then they would be converted to a format that would include (optionally) the lyrics to the song. This format was then used to tell the game when to send a specific key/ key combination on the guitar track, instructing the player on how to play the song.
Title screen of the Busker game, created in Spring semester 2010
Basic game play of Busker. The instructions on how to play a song would scroll from the right to the left, and playing the note on tempo would result in a higher score
This was a tool we created to do editing of MIDI files that were parsed by our note generation tool. We would use this tool to "clean up" the midi (delete notes that made the song sound too busy) as well as insert lyrics into the file to be displayed at the proper time during gameplay.
