Normal Folks: Documentary on homosexuality

Through this documentary, I hope to explore what Indian society at large feels about homosexuality.
The Indian Society as I have begun to understand, is not a homogenous unit but a collective of many diverse social groups. And the diversity, whether rooted in ways of life (such as tribal, nomadic, semi nomadic, agriculturists, small town jobs, metro city) or religion (organized, indigenous faiths, reform movements), lends to varying frameworks of what constitutes `social norms’. So it would be worthwhile to find out the views of these diverse groups, on `homosexuality.

The people interviewed for the documentary have come from various social and economic backgrounds. The film aims at looking at homosexuality through a number of perspectives – people from the fields of social sciences, psychology, literature and medicine.

The general response/reaction to homosexuality goes from acceptance to ignorance to intolerance to hatred. The interpretation generating from the understanding of sex (male/female/inter sex), gender performance (masculine/feminine) and sexuality (choice of sex object). The intolerance and hatred originates not only due to the concept of sexuality but also due to prescribed gender behaviors and their transgression.

The film attempts to hold a non-judgmental stance about people and their reactions, serving more as a mirror of the present. I am more interested in the 'why' rather than the 'what'.
