Anime Machine Book Redesign & Typeface

The task at hand was to pick an academic journal and fully redesign it's formality & presentation to better fit it's true purpose of communication. I had decided to redesign "Anime Machine by The Anime Machine: A Media Theory of Animation by Thomas LaMarre. I focused on traditional japanese animation and japanese culture throughout the whole process of producing this book.

A few key elements, I had worked with was building the grid system out of a traditional japanese storyboard structure. I also built and designed a fully functional typeface named "E.katakana" that would act like traditional japanese katakana type from a distance, but from up close it would still be readable within the english language. I also had worked with different scanning techniques to bring in more of a handmade traditional ascetic to each & every spread.

Along side the redesigned journal, I also had a chance to design a branding book  & a Typeface poster to showcase the inner workings of this design system. These projects brought further joy to me and allowed me to further study traditional 2d japanese animation and their specific culture within the industry. Personaly I believe Animation as a medium has such a great power and movement within itself. It truely deserves further attention. This form of story telling and communication can truely bring a myriad of emotions to anyone and needs our further support, so lets do our part.
