The city of Pompeii was an ancient Roman town-city near modern Naples in Italy. Pompeii, along with Herculaneum and many villages in the surrounding area, was destroyed and buried under metres of ash and pumice during the Mount Vesuvius eruption in 79 AD. Today the archeological site is managed by the Italian Ministry of Culture. However recent issues (i.e. the partial fall of a building) brought to the public attention the fragility of the Pompeii archeological site and the need to invest more on the preservation of such an incredibly important site and on its continuous monitoring and management.
