Research:
Using the leaves from the Jabuticaba Tree, an antiseptic is extracted and used in
the fabrication of anti-cavity chewing gum. This gum has benefits that can not be found in
any of the commercially available products. The extract fights three cultures from dental
plaque such as streptococcus mutan, streptococcus sobrinus, and streptococcus sanguis.
The benefits of having Plinia Cauliflora extract as an antiseptic gum also includes: reduction
of bacterial biofilm, prevention of gingivitis, prevention of calcification of biofilm, bacterial
resistance, and it is stainless.

The chewing gum will be sold to the general public with the purpose of benefiting
a Brazilian government program called “Smiley Brazil”. This program focus on reaching
to underdeveloped communities in the Northern part of Brazil and giving them access to
basic dental care. The problem of dental care in Brazil is a public issue of epidemiological
relevance. In this poor and underdeveloped areas there is a lack of access to dental health
care, leading to high incidence of tooth decay and specially tooth loss due to lack of treatment.
The percentage of people completely toothed between the ages of 12 to 18 years
old are only 39% in the North region and 45% in the Northeastern area.
The project investigates three aspects of design: branding, packaging, and disposal
of the chewing gum.

For branding, a logo for the anti-septic gum was designed inspired by three elements: the Jabuticaba’s
leaf, bubble gum, and dentistry. The typeface chosen is Pluto which was designed by Hannes von Döhren. This
typeface has a informal, friendly, and contemporary feel which goes well with the other elements of the packaging.
The color pallet is inspired by the colors found in the Jabuticaba tree as well as the Brazilian flag: purple,
yellow, and green. The pattern used in the packaging was inspired by geometric shapes that could be found
in the Brazilian flag combined with a stylized boy chewing gum. These elements combined create a fun and
vibrant look that represents the Brazilian culture. The idea is to inspire Brazilians to purchase a product that is
beneficial not only to their health but also to their culture, environment, and economics. By buying the Brazilian
made gum, they are not only supporting the Smiley Brazil dental program but also supporting their local
economy. The packaging was inspired by the simplicity of a wallet as well as the gum packages already present
in the market. It uses recyclable paper and the gum is also biodegradable.
