Paper Messengers - ISTD 2014 - "Tara"

Brief: Paper Messengers

The International Society of Typographic Design release a set of five student briefs annually.
The brief I chose to submit was named 'Paper Messengers' and was to design a set of stamps (minimum of five),
a publication/experience, a first day cover and presentation pack. After a long research, I chose Women's Rights
as a subject.
The project was then judged by the society based on its typographic value.

I was accredited by the society and thus received a permanent membership. (June 2014)

The Concept

A Historical Background:
Women's Rights has been an important issue since the beginning of the 19th century. Those rules might have been applied in other countries but not in Lebanon.
After all the exploration and the research that has been collected. I've found out that all of these women are being abused in every way; for example: A women doesn't have the right to give her nationality to her child, man doesn't let her have her own voice in the parliament or even to speak about her sufferance because she will be directly killed, a women is kiddnapped for many purposes and so on.
A Stamp is a small valuable piece of paper that communicates with others and they carry messages designed
to influence, inspire and evolve.
The key element is to use the stamps for any purpose and to imagine the communicative power of the stamp,
re-evaluating the expressive and communicative power of stamps using rich visual potential offered
by typographic forms.

The Link
Relating my job as a visual communicator and a female in this society by creating a campaign using provocative messages, defending women's rights in this country to bring awareness about this important subject of study since not all women know their rights.

The Title

''Tara'' is the name of the project since ''Tara'' is a female Goddess that has been known for many forms in every culture, Goddess of peace and protection. She embodies the feminine strengths of great caring and compassion, the ability to endure stressful and even terrifying moments, the acts of creation, and the source of sustenance and protection. Not only ''Tara'' means the Goddess in other cultures, but also it means ''To see'' in arabic.
This matching title is a pun to shed up lights of the Women's rights issues.

Type Treatment

The title logo ''Tara'' was made in a very specific way using clarendon as a base for the logo creation since it has the strong feel and creating the arabic version out of it. Connecting these two words together by the letter ''t'' made a total success and reflected a strong feel for the project itself.

Stamps

Type Treatment

Arabic and Latin interact one with the other in a mechanical and intuitive way, creating interesting layouts
that follow the grid. The overall feeling reflects the strong and put into action movement which gave the project
a meaningful treatment.

The Format

Stamps A collection of five stamps:
The size of the stamp is 35.4x24.8 mm, with an extra 42 mm
for the perforation. The final size of the stamp is 39.6x29 mm.
The size of the stamp is based on the governmental size.
These stamps are issued with the help of the government to collect money to help those poor women who are being abused.
The stamp is based on a rectangle, a visually strong form to evoke authority, stability and trust.
Using arabic and english to portray a message with the illustrations made is a important visual treatment
to attract everyone to buy, collect and donate for the sake of the women's rights.
The envelope is based on the governmental DL size.
The two hand stamps size are 35 mm.
The Mini sheets (extra one stamp) are created to celebrate the women's day and give an importance to her existence on earth.

Image And Visual Treatment

Colors
The visual treatment adopted reflects the mood of sadness, sufferance that women are facing nowadays.
The illustrations are made very simple due to the small size of the stamp. The women in four stamps is shown with her portrait side to the left since it gives a stronger image with the typography. The illustrations are very interactive with the type which gave it supportive feeling.
Many colors has been used in the creation of the visual treatment for the stamps since they all end up
with the same meaning.
Red is a strong-willed color, can give confidence and promotes ambition and determination.
Dark blue gives authority and is communicative, peaceful, powerful and responsible.
Brown is supportive, serious and stable, takes obligations seriously and secure.
Gray, a color of compromise, solid and stable, and creates sadness, loneliness and isolation.
Dark yellow to indicate an inclination toward depression and melancholy.
Off-white (Ivory) represents quiet.
Monochromatic impressions and duotone visuals indicate a rudimentary approach away from shiny glittering colors.
As a result, the stamps becomes a unique journey that offers provocative messages, and an exploration method to support women and teach them their rights, worth collecting.

Website

An interactive communication power created to support ''Tara'' as an organization, defending women's rights in order to connect together, volunteer, read the news, check the new campaigns to support women's rights.

Campaign animation

A small, minimal animation was made in order to reflect the mood and the sufferance these women are facing
and a call to action.

This piece aims at expressing this through using sound, visuals(using the stamps) and typography to encourage
the viewer to watch, listen and read the screen in order to understand the idea behind these stamps.
