When deciding on an add for vegetarian food in a country where vegeterianism isn't in vogue (in fact it's rejected by a very big majority), you have to be sure to make the product both appealing and fun. People in South America are used to flavorful meals and are pretty reticent to change, so one has to be pretty creative in order to hold their attention with a product they tend to reject outright.
Because I had been dying to try out some paper craft lately, I decided to make some popular "meat" products with paper, relating it to a phrase that I have repeatedly heard about vegetarian foods, particularly meat replacements: "This tastes like cardboard." Advertising of this type is not common in Venezuela, so it seemed like a good choice for an attention grabbing image. Based on this process, the copy "Not all vegetarian food has to taste like cardboard," seemed like an obvious choice.
I wanted the paper craft food to be the center of attention, while using graphic elements in the most sparingly possible way. Advertising here tends to rely WAY too much on text and I preffered to deviate from that norm so as to stand out even more.
The process, I might add, was a lot of fun.
If anyone is interested in the patterns that I worked out for these foods, send me a message and I'll post them as well. They're pretty easy to make once you have the templates.
