European Cathedral Vintage Travel Posters

While traveling through France and Spain the summer of 2012 I visited various cathedrals. Each one intrigued me with its specific history and style. I studied them up-close and found what each church was known for, especially noting how the cathedrals were constructed and which textures and patterns were used. This informed my choices of which parts of each church were crucial for me to include in my work to easily identify the churches. Vintage travel posters inspired me to utilize flat imagery and emphasize typography in my poster series while only including the minimum information needed to recognize each cathedral.

Sagrada’s four main spires are at the center of the Sagrada Familia Cathedral poster. These spires heavily rely on the design of the individual stones to show shape and texture. In the print the sandy color of the cathedral body references the color of the stones used to build the towers of the actual cathedral.

The narrow structure of the Paris Notre Dame Cathedral is the central focus of this poster and highlights the elongated spires of the cathedral. The arches are repeated to represent the architecture in the front of the church. Cream-colored stones reflect the stones of the physical cathedral.

The Rouen Notre Dame Cathedral poster shows its broken bell tower along with two of its main towers. This poster focuses on the unique structure and texture of the cathedral’s spires.

The Chartres Notre Dame Cathedral poster focuses on the two distinctive towers of the cathedral and its famous rose window containing “Chartres blue” stained glass.
