This book is about the meaning and the functions of the archive. We got in touch with Corriere della Sera, an important italian newspaper, and had the chance to visit their archive, that covers more than a century of history. We focused on the archive as a tool to preserve and build identity.

The first part of the book introduces Corriere's archive, its sections and the rules it's regulated by. Along with an interview to the archive's manager, Francesca Tramma, selected editorials rebuild the story about its foundation and its role in the country's history.

In the second part the newspaper identity is retraced through ten front pages of defining moments in its history. For each one we provide some historical context and run a deep analysis of the visual language.

In this section we break down the composition by extrapolating the typefaces: we compare their use, focusing on their relation to the visual hierarchy of the page.

To understand the language of the newspaper towards its readers we show the editorials of the ten front pages, each one with a significant meaning, beacause of a big news or of an editor change. The punctuation is highlighted since it's an important tool to define the tone of the writing.

To give a deeper insight into the writing style, we analyzed the length of the sentences: by forcing line breaks after each sentence the text itself has become the histogram that represent the data.
