The Drunken Sailor Tavern

A recent commission that I found pretty interesting. I was asked to create an illustration based upon the clients own short story.

The scene I illustrated, is a view within 'The Drunken Sailor' pub, a tavern within a disused and delapidated lighthouse.

I was asked to include two characters in particular, Captain Scuttle (The protaganist) , and his first mate, Bob the Canary. It is an A4 piece made using pencil, and then fineliners on watercolour paper.

The scene takes place at end of a long hard night and morning of drinking inside the pub. The last men left standing, are Captain Scuttle, First mate Bob, and the Barman, Pascal. The rest lay strewn about the bar, asleep, passed out and slumped over where they fell.
Initial roughwork , trying to get a feel of the layout of pubs interior by roughing out the design of the building as a whole.
Little sketches of variations of The Drunken Sailor lighthouse tavern.
Thumbnails trying to layout the composition. A portrait view proved to be far too restrictive to the content I wanted to include so I finally decided to flip it to a landscape view which made things far easier.
Trying to get a feel for the look of Captain Scuttle.
Pencil underdrawing slowly dissapearing beneath the ink.
Captain Scuttle, with first mate Bob the Canary perched a top an empty tankard of ale. The Barman Pascal looking on dissaprovingly at Scuttle's early morning belligerence.
Thanks for having a look!
