The study aims at the economic and tourist development of Messolonghi and the joint action of its inhabitants, both among themselves as well with visitors.
The artificial island of Tourlida is a connection node of Messolonghi with Araxos airport of Patras and the surrounding towns by ferry and air services. So its positions strengthens the role of the island as an atraction pole for turists.
The proposal consists of two axes. The first relates to the reorganization of the artificial island of Tourlidas and the second the redesign of "Pelada" as a dwelling unit.
We create a Masterplan that combines the existance of visitors with these of the Messolonghi inhabitants by creating large public spaces with access from the town of Messolonghi as well from Araxos Airport, with the new ferry services, and with the program diversity that exists in the Island (dwelling units, church, cafes, restaurants, beach, parks etc.). Concerning the internal transportation the car is replaced by the bike and the boat, for which canals are opened that serve the exchange of water between the two lagoons (Messolonghi and Aitoliko) to avoid stagnant water in the area.
The “pelada”, the residence currently used, maintains its extroversion, but it is revised as a habitation module and becomes more flexible and organic, changing character depending on weather conditions. The relation between the three elements, the platform, the pelada and the boat, is redefined. The boat becomes an integral part of pelada and the platform acquires a more public character.
