The Dickens Fellowship is in the process of launching a new 'magazine' for its members that has a more lighthearted feel than the more academic Dickensian.

I was asked to come up with a brand and layout to reflect this. The first thing I approached was the branding. I wanted something that reflected both the historical side of the Dickens Fellowship as well as something that would feel fresh and modern. This was achieved through the creation of the brand, something that easily works as a header to a magazine and as a standalone brand.
To reflect the name, I went with the idea of a tree and its reflection. It had to be an English Oak as part of the identity and even though they are not really roots, the reflection maintained a connection with the brand. This design will then be used across each issue as a way of showing a key image within the magazine in an abstract way.
The final layout was kept clean and minimal with the headline, image and key articles mentioned but with large areas of space around the cover.
As a magazine it will remain an online publication as both ePUB and PDF so it can be read on a desktop or handheld device.
But maintaining the look and feel of a 'real' magazine.
