Idiot's Delight Poster

Idiot's Delight, a play that takes place in the first 24 hours of World War Two. A group of diverse people; each having their own story and unique background, are trapped in hotel resort. While war rages outside, some in the hotel chose to loom for a way out of this situation, while some stay put and complain. During the loud explosions outside, romance blossoms and blood, is shed.

I had the lovely opportunity to create a play poster for this work. Scott Cox, the director, gave three distinct words that they wanted the poster to convey, and we were sent to work. They wanted the poster to be romantic, precarious, and oblivious. They also wanted it to give off the feel of a 1930s Hollywood Poster.
 ^This was the final version of my poster U w U ^
What I wanted to go for was a vector collage look, with poster propaganda color palettes.
 ^Some process posters where I was playing with color... I was struggling @ w @ ^
The first and second posters here were the first two distinct directions I could go with. The first one is the silhouettes of the two main characters in the play sitting on stools that would be at a bar, then the shafts that connect the cushion to the floor sprawls out into a web, I got inspiration from The Great Gatsby. The second one is silhouettes of the main character but only their clothes are there, nothing really inspired it, I just wanted to try it. I gave them those head pieces (blindfold/mask) to call back to one of the key words I was given, oblivious. The background is supposed to be a bar because most of the play/scenes take place at a cocktail bar inside the hotel.

With feedback, I eventually went with the second option and continued with that. I give it a lot more color and enlarged everything so it's more focused on the two main characters. For the title, I put it on a sign so it wouldn't get lost as easily, I got inspiration from old cinema signs. I also replaced some bottles in the background with planes and bombs to call back to the war part of the play. I then got further feedback and I refined the poster again to its final look.

I gave the main character their bodies back because the head pieces made me think of a carnival or a murder mystery. Instead, I gave both of the hats that looked like hats worn in the 1930s. I also gave the female actor a cigar because the actor in the play smokes, then I turned the smoke into a heart to call back to romance.
