What a Carve Up! is a darkly comic farce, that combines the classic elements of a murder mystery, and juxtaposes them against the political backdrop of Britain in the 1980's. Jonathan Coe criticizes Thatcher's reign of power through the creation of the Winshaws: a family presented in the novel as the ultimate economic power in Britain. Each family member controls a different part of Britain's economy: press, art, music, agriculture, etc., and they use their influence to maximise profits at the expense of the British people. In essence, they are 'carving up' Britain and keeping all of the 'meat' for themselves.
My entry juxtaposes this analogy with the iconic image of a piggybank, creating a symbol that portrays the fragile state of the Britain's economy, whilst interpreting the title of the novel in a comic way that accurately reflects the tone of the novel. I used yellow for the background as it's associated with both comedy and danger/caution.
