Reem Khaled Sumaida - Talli

Reem Khaled

Talli has evolved from being used only in apparel to finding applications in packaging, exhibits, products, and more. I have explored this topic to introduce new ideas to the industry, promote our culture, and raise awareness of traditional crafts. By analyzing the impact of using these traditions in a current context, we can better incorporate them into our work. As a child, I loved visiting textile stores to explore fabrics, threads, and other clothing-related items. My passion for textiles, designs, and threads grew from these visits. Inspired by local handicrafts like Talli, my project “NASEEJ” aims to showcase patterns of our traditional crafts in a contemporary way that reflects our culture.
As an Emirati graphic designer, I am passionate about preserving our traditional handicrafts, specifically the art of talli. My goal is to create modern and unique designs that highlight the beauty of this craft. I want to develop talli-inspired patterns that can be used to make textiles, and then brand them by creating lifestyle and stationery products. Through this process, I hope to showcase the versatility of these handicrafts and demonstrate that they can be utilized in a contemporary way while still honoring their cultural roots.
