Reimagining 17-storey abandoned building

Re-imagination of 17-storey abandoned building at RadheRadhe, Bhaktapur
Project Name: 'Khudkilo' - A Social Encounter
Competition Entree ( Prarambha 2024)
Participants: Prasoon Shrestha, Sandhya Khatiwada, Urusha Paudel

The current site context of RadheRadhe, Bhaktapur is an abandoned 17 storey building initially intended as a commercial, hotel complex but stopped mid-construction due to government interference regarding building by-laws. Today, it stands tall imposing its strength around other buildings in the vicinity, yet bears no functional purpose nor houses anyone- just empty ghostly corridors. This competition entree was a re-imagination on what would have happened if the building had never been built, but was an empty space with an urban hub to be constructed as a program.

Amidst the busy, bustling streets of Radhe Radhe which has been a heavy commercial hub in recent years, the re-imagined space opposite to Bhatbhateni Supermarket, beside Araniko highway demands an intersection hub that not only stands tall uniquely, grabbing the eyes of people passing all while being a social junction - encouraging activity and participation.

'Khudkilo' - A Social Encounter
A staircase as a resting space in general, a space to wait for bus, a conjectural point for people to wait for their friends and families, and all this while sitting and interacting at multiple levels.
Aerial Maquette view of the social staircase and the smaller ensembles juxtaposed around it.
The main part of the ensemble is a series of six flight of stairs and four intermediate landings, starting with an inclined juxtaposed stairway placed in a way to welcome visitors from both intersecting roads. This series has no destination to reach rather, gives you a journey to take. People from various backgrounds either waiting for bus, people or during leisure are filled in the road in front of the site, whose resting place has become the parapet walls of neighbor Bhatbhateni Complex. 'Khudkilo' - solves this and allows people to connect at multiple levels, either sun or shadow, whatver they want.
Other functions led by 'Khudkilo', include a courtyard space eneveloped by an eatery with a reading nook, semi-open intermediate space, space for social events and cumulated street food market, sustainably utilizing all the vendors in the streets to facilitate proper urban zoning and clear circulation route. Further techniques like use of durable materials, universal design approaches & passive thermal control systems in the complex aid long-term sustainable goals.
