Have you ever wondered what it would be like to celebrate Irreechaa, on Mars?
That’s the idea behind my Project, Irreechaa on Mars, which explores the scientific and cultural aspects of Gadaa system, I show how the Oromo people use their knowledge of astronomy, mathematics, and calendar to observe Irreechaa on the red planet.
Gadaa system It is not only a political and legal system, but also a way of understanding the cosmos and the natural phenomena. Astronomy is one of the fields of knowledge that the Oromo people have developed through Sirna Gadaa. They have observed the movements of the sun, the moon, the stars, and the planets, and used them to measure time, to determine seasons, to plan agricultural activities, to celebrate festivals, and to perform rituals. Irreechaa is a time to thank Waaqa (God) for the blessings and mercies received throughout the year, and to welcome the new season of abundance and harmony. I believe that God created all the Planets, not only Earth, and we should thank him in space too.
