The Problem
Singaporean youths face a disconnect from local traditional art forms due to limited exposure and unfamiliarity. The overshadowing influence of contemporary art further diminishes interest in traditional crafts. Hence, there is a lack of avenues that discuss traditional crafts, increasing the challenge of preserving and promoting this aspect of Singapore's cultural heritage.

Why focus on local traditional arts?
Traditional craftsmanship in Singapore, comprising skills and techniques passed down through generations, forms a vital part of the nation's cultural identity. These crafts which are rich in historical and cultural significance, showcase the creativity and expertise of local artisans across various disciplines.

Survey & Research Insights
While many expressed interest in traditional crafts, they have not proactively sought information or learning opportunities. Additionally, I observed an absence of accessible and comprehensive platforms dedicated to educating traditional craftsmanship. Existing forums, though informative, lack interactivity and fail to engage new learners.
Introducing Jalan Jalan!
Jalan Jalan is an engaging solution to help bridge the gap between Singaporean youths and their cultural heritage. Designed to reconnect users with traditional craftsmanship, Jalan Jalan empowers users to explore, learn, and appreciate the beauty of local traditional crafts through AR guided trails. That is how we came to name our app "Jalan Jalan", a Malay term for walk about or wander.
The Jalan Jalan App
Jalan Jalan offers a range of interactive features to enhance the user’s cultural exploration experience. Jalan Jalan features AR discovery trails that allow interactive learning through various AR features for users to explore, learn, and connect easily.
Other functions that help support and encourage further learning are the AI chat and trial archive functions. The AI chat allows users to ask KIKI anything about local traditional arts and ask for help identifying works! The trail archive page lets users revisit completed trails and feeds extra information!
To break down the app, here are some of Jalan Jalan's key features:

AR guided trails:
Our AR-guided trails allow users to discover and learn about different traditional crafts in various areas within Singapore. Each trail brings users along a pre-designed route with checkpoints to explore using a voice guide and different AR features. Checkpoints include places like workshops and art displays around areas locally like Joo Chiat and Chinatown.

AI chatbot function:
Upon coming across a craft or work they want to enquire more about, they can go to the AI chat page to ask for help identifying it. There is an AR scanning feature where it can help users identify and learn about any type of work. Users can also ask anything about traditional crafts and get the following information!

AR archive catalog:
After the trail, users can revisit the trails and crafts seen in the archive page. They can enter the checkpoint portals to learn about parts of specific local traditional crafts here through different categories. It utilises the AR display, allowing users to dive deeper into each craft at home.

Character Stands:
These character stands will be placed at each checkpoint that help raise awareness about the crafts and encourage people to download the app for continued learning. These are also indicators for existing users to show the checkpoint's location.

Postcards:
The postcards serve as a keepsake for existing users to capture their trails while it help advertise Jalan Jalan to the general public. The postcard introduces each craft and invites one to download the app by promoting it with a description of its functions and a download QR code.
