Erica Smeets-Klokgieters

Traditionally, it has been the male architects who have been known and received all the appreciation. With this book, Erica Smeets-Klokgieters wanted to bring the first female architects out of obscurity and give them a platform so that they get the attention they deserve. Beukers Scholma wanted to emphasize this once again with the design of the book. The compact, handy size and the tactile band material reflect the personal, accessible and often modest character of the women.

The historic black-and-white photos of the 21 female architects portrayed at the back of the book have been enhanced and colored with the help of AI in Photoshop. By coloring we get a better idea of what they might have looked like and what makes them come to life. To do justice to history, the original photos are shown separately. Although the quality of the images found varies, the emphasis is more on giving the women a face than on having a perfectly sharp image. Using the images is a way to recognize and honor their stories and work and to build a bridge between the present and the past.
