H.G.Wells Alternate Book Covers
Penguin's chain brand, Penguin Trios, needed a consistent theme throughout to form a special collection. I chose to use a leaf as a simple and photogenic icon to represent these classic science fiction novels as I felt this modernised them by grounding them in reality. Each cover uses a different leaf which I collected and photographed to communicate themes from each book. The ageing variety of leaves transforms the set into a timeline, linking the books with another common theme - the fragility of life and the inescapable effects of time.

A camouflage effect is applied to the type and the water drops are arranged in the loose shape of a man. The healthy green leaf begins the visual timeline for the collection.

The leaf was set alight and the burnt embers were scattered with water drops to give the impression of the aftermath of a battle.

This withered leaf was torn and posed to suggest a strong force is blowing it apart. The faded colour treatment creates a melancholic beauty the final segment of the visual timeline.
