Curse for Good | Greenpeace
Romania, the Amazon of Europe, is losing 20 million cubic meters of wood every year due to illegal logging. But Romania also happens to be a country where people still respect witches and witchcraft. Even politicians and celebrities fear them. With authorities indifferent to the problem, Greenpeace needed to use a drastic approach to stop the illegal logging.
Instead of using celebrities or activists, they partnered with Primavera, a well-known local witch, to put a curse on the ones who are illegally cutting the forests down.
Some believed in the curse, some didn’t and were provoked to make the law stronger than the curse by signing the petition to ask the Government for a Modern Wood Tracking System. Regardless, it started a conversation that was impossible to ignore. The local and international press picked up the story putting pressure on authorities to act. The Satellite Wood Tracking System was in the end adopted and implemented by the Romanian Government.
