Exercise 06: Grid & Typographic Structure

Exercise 06: Grid & Typographic Structure
This exercise has enabled me to learn more about typographic grid systems. I learned that there are many possiblities when it comes to arranging a typographic grid system. Throughout this process I used single and multicomumn grids.
For the first five layouts I used Baskerville, I continued to use this font throughout all 25 grid system layouts. It was difficult at first to come up with that many variations especially when the rules were stricter. In the final 10 layouts I decided to use Baskerville, Helvetica and Georgia. I decided to use a combination of San Serif fonts and Serif fonts, this made the layout look more interesting/visually appealing. I also found it diffecult to lay text alone the Z-axis, I tried multiple times, but I think it looks unbalanced. I played around with line length and type size. Throughout the layouts I made sure that there was a hiearchy, whether making the font size bigger, changing the weight, and thinking about the placement of the text. The Baskerville font was designer by John Baskerville and was designed during the 1750’s and is a Serif font. The Helvetica font was designed by Max Miedinger/Eduard Hoffmann in the 1950’s and is a Sans Serif Font. Finally, the Georgia font is a Serif font and was designed by Matthew Carter in the 1990’s. By completing this exercies I have gained a greater amount of knowledge about typographic grid systems.
Layout 1
For the first 5 layouts, I experimented with only the horizontal axis (X-axis) at a 9 pt font size and the same typeface (Baskerville.)
Layout 2
For the next 5 layouts (5-10), I played around with the horizontal and vertical axis's  (X&Y), as well as the font size to create new layout iterations. These layouts are also created with using one typeface (Baskerville.)
Layout 3
For layout 10-15, I messed around with the horizontal, vertical, and diagonal axis's (X&Y&Z), still using one typeface and font sizes/weight.
Layout 4
In layouts 15-20, I experimented with the X,Y, and Z axis's and the font sizes/weight. I also was able to play around with different typefaces.
Layout 5
For layout 20-25, I was able to play around with the same rules as the other 20 layouts, in addition to those rules I was able to add a picture.
Final 5 Layouts
Up above are the final 5 compositions that exhibit the different rules that are seen in all of the different layout sections.
