Collage&Commentary
For this project, the goal was to create two collages that comment on some political, social, or economic concern. Two 18x24 inch collages were made by hand and scanned and only one was chosen to be printed into a 24' x 36' print. With this project, CMYK colors were used. The two issues that I chose were queer rights and political polarization.
There has always been a continuous back and fourth between queer people government, but now more than ever queer right are one of the leading political issues in America. Currently, it feels like lawmakers are tying to rip apart the queer community and demonize those that are apart of the community. I really wanted to create the tension and desperation that the queer community is feeling fighting what seems like an up hill battle to be treated like normal people that are deserving of respect. With this collage, I decided to use the color lavender due to the fact that it is historically linked with the queer community as well as the plant. I decided to use hands that you reaching out for each other to symbolize the queer community being ripped apart with new legislature coming out and the rising hostility.
The second topic that I chose to work was political polarization. Statistics have show that over time that America is becoming more polarized politically with the average democrat and republican being farther and farther apart on he political spectrum. Because of this, a lot of Americans adopt an "us versus them" mentality when it comes to politics. No one can seem to get along and we can't to seem to tolerate people with different opinions then us which is a concerning to think about. With this collage, I decided to use red and blue, as well as the elephant and donkey which are symbols for both political parties. I decided to create a "fight" with images of protester to visualize what the current political climate is like in America.
