Fragility of Symbolism
As part of the fragility of symbolism book I designed, I additionally developed this extensively layered
typographic design to portray the infinity of interpretation which symbolism is influenced and constructed
through. The body copy that was used to construct my design originated from the interviews that were
featured in my book design ‘For the Record’. I then compiled the interviews into individual typographic
hierarchies to emphasise the impact symbolism has on the individual person through example of
interpretation of what the Swastika symbol means. The design itself is spread over five layers of engraved
Perspex with each design having a varied engraving level in order to increase visual depth within the
design. Additionally, I have purposely designed the typography to intersect within the centre to
communicate how numerous symbolisms connected to one symbol can cause confusion.
