Patio Mural for Bumbo’s Bar in Hamtramck, MI
The bar’s owner mentioned wanting the patio to feel like an oasis from the city. She referenced greenhouses and conservatories and, with the amount of plants on the patio, creating an illusion of extending the brick patio, which I figured out could be solved with a cheeky one-point perspective. Thus, Greenhouse Slumber Party. This was a unique challenge because I couldn’t project or trace the drawing, so I freehanded the drawing and painting with rollers (and a little brush at the end). The blue happens to perfectly match with the sky during late eastern time zone summer evenings. From a patron perspective, I think it’s important for a bar’s mural to complement the rest of the design and be more than a resting place for one’s eyes. If you’re at the bar alone, having the artwork be detailed and interesting enough that you always see something new is something important to me and was great fun to populate the mural with so many different plants.
