Tea-set with abstract calligraphy
This handmade tea set was designed to hold abstract calligraphy insipred decoration. The simple, cylinder-like forms are suitable for the thick straight lines. The shapes run through two or more sides and create visual connections with each other from different angles.
The process started with line drawings to find simple yet exciting shapes.
Than I worked with wide brush and black ink on paper. This technique is more relatable to the final process.
The last step was to create the suitable pigment and paint it on the clay body. Lot of test was needed and many different tools, techniques and test firings. Also it is challenging to create straight lines on a 3D surface.The white clay had to be very thick otherwise it faded too much.
The final results became dark black coloured pottery with stencil styled calligraphy decoration. The white and black lines create different connections between the object from different perspective.
The herbal tea set includes a 500ml teapot, two 200ml mugs and a 300ml capacity box for the tea leaves. These pieces are all handthrown, hand painted, high fired which make them strong and perfect for everyday use.
