Parc de l'Espoir Redesign

The proposed redesign.
The current park.
This redesign aims to maintain the interactive nature of the park and it's presence as a shared space in the community. While at the same time creating a space that is more cohesive and that celebrates life instead of death.

This maquette of the redesigned park displays a wire canopy created for people to hang ribbons and other memorial objects on. It also displays sliding benches/stepping stools for helping the public to hang ribbons and to create a public space for gathering.

History: Parc de l'Espoir is a park in Montreal, QC that was created in memory of the people in Quebec who have died from AIDS. The park was started spontaneously by a group called ACT-UP Montreal, an activist group concerned with fighting for access to medication and to represent people fighting AIDS against social stigma, police repression and government negligence.

In 1991 the group finished a protest in an empty lot on the corner of Saint-Catherine and Rue Panet. The group tied 1 200 black ribbons around the tree branches in this lot. After that the public continued this tradition leaving ribbons in the trees and other personal items on the site. In 1997 the park was officially inaugurated as a memorial to people who had died from AIDS in Quebec.
