Lorde Digital Portrait
I illustrated an excerpt from The Billboard Cover Story article written by Jason Lipshutz.
The main idea of the article is the duality of Lorde: from the one hand she is a normal
New Zealander, from the other hand she is “legitimate genius”, who “courts enigma, harking
back to the mid-'90s heyday of alternative dark-stars like Mazzy Star and Portishead
that preferred to let their music do the talking”. In my opinion this contrast is quite an interesting
part of Lorde's personality. That's why I have decided to draw attention to this aspect.
The concept behind the illustration of the article is the duality of Lorde's image. One part
of the Lorde's portrait represents her as a typical New Zealand girl. There is a common New
Zealand landscape behind the singer. This is the representation of her ordinary life
here in New Zealand. The second half of the artwork is the representation of her enigmatic, mystique side she desires to retain. Some people describe her lyrics as being a bit
dark - that is where this vision of the dark forest in the background is emerging from. Dramatic lighting and the victorian/gothic dress and the accessories are emphasizing the effect.
The byline is “A regular enigma” reflects the idea of the article and the concept of the portrait.
