THE ANIX - CRAWL (feat. JULIEN-K)

In early 2024, I contacted LA-based electronic rock artist The Anix about working on his upcoming album, Voltage.
We were already fans of each other's work, so he sent me the first single, Crawl, which he made in collaboration with Julien-K's Amir Derakh.
Brandon shot and edited a performance video in LA with Amir, which he later sent over to me for post-processing with my Tachyons+ Dreamweapon.
I started by rescanning the footage on my TV for screen texture. Easy enough.
When I started finding the first glitch looks, the Dreamweapon was either blowing out the details in the background so the foreground could be distorted, or vice versa.
I found loads of looks for background glitching, but only one for the foreground to be detailed, but still nicely distorted, not just textured.
I went back to the original footage, brought the highlights down, brought the shadows up, and then tried glitching again.
After sending the early texture tests to Brandon, I started on look-dev and began figuring out which glitches I should use. I ended up using one base look for the first chorus and another for the second chorus.
Then, when the visual groundwork of a rescan and two looks had been laid down, I was free to throw any and all adjustments at them for the finale.
When it came to colour grading, Brandon liked the idea of greens, greys and faded neon reds, which worked out great with the artwork for Voltage.
I also re-shot some of my glitches with fractal lens filters for punchier moments in the first bridge and the latter halves of the choruses for some more intensity.
After grading and adding the prism takes, I sent my complete cut to Brandon for him to composite with his original version and new ideas. That one became the final cut.
