Created as a part of heritage textiles project, this rug is an attempt to give a new direction to the craft of making felt products in Rajasthan, India. It is the final outcome of a 6 week design project. The idea was to incorporate a new property into the wide repertoire of the properties exhibited by felt products.
The smaller scale model, created in order to work out the technical details, especially the working of the LEDs.
The rug is created by sandwiching a layer of LED within three felt layers of varying thickness. The rug follows a basic hexagonal grid construction, and the technique of sandwiching takes inspiration from inlay technique. As is visible here, the central layer provides required thickness for execution.
Created completely from ready felt; the rug lends a pristine geometry to the space during the day, and a beautiful lighting fixture by night. The lighting is manipulated so as to not be too harsh, but to provide the neccesary glow.
