The Roma community, Skopje

This is a community of about 30 Roma people who lived in the remains of the old factory in Skopje, Macedonia. The conditions in which they lived were horrendous - no toilets, no running water, no heating. Life was particularly difficult during the winter as the building is barely more than a tent with its torn walls and collapsing roof. They told me that previous winter a baby died of cold.
They make their living by collecting cardboard and plastic and reselling it for recycling.

A month after these photographs were taken the building was torn down by the coucil . I never found out what happened with the people that lived in it.
